The Lever #072: The ONE Job of Leaders

Welcome to issue No. 072 of the Lever

Leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less.

But influence to do… what?

In the end it comes down to just one thing

But first…

You don't have to do it all.

It probably feels like that somedays though. Like you are the only one that is doing the work. Like you are the only one that cares.

This is because most people just want to be told what to do.

They want to feel like they have control and are in charge, but they don't actually want to take responsibility for the decisions being made.

You need to help them own that responsibility.

Whose Job Is It?

Every job in an organization needs an owner. Somebody responsible for the outcome.

It is NOT the leaders job to lead every job.

It is the leaders job to make sure that every job has a leader.

Again

Your job as a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader.

This doesn't mean you aren't accountable for the results of that work however.

As a leader you are ultimately answerable for the failure or success of the tasks under your department.

But the responsibility of completing that job falls on the person assigned to do the work.

No matter what level you are at in the organization, you are accountable for the team assigned to you. And you activate that accountability by making them responsible for the assignment.

Leadership is Shared

If the job of a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader, then leadership becomes a shared activity.

To do this effectively you need to switch from being solely task focused. You need to zoom out and be able to see the bigger picture. You need to be able to guide teams and individuals.

You become a:

  • Coach
  • Mentor
  • Instructor

And a master of delegation (one of the Foundational 5 Skills).

P.S.

This idea is so foundational that it needs to be repeated one more time:

The job of a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader.

This is the ONE job of leaders.

Welcome to issue No. 070 of the Lever Good writing leads to good thinking. And a little revision leads back to great (well, at least better) writing. When you write, write. Don't edit, correct, or second guess. But when you are done its time to revise, using the ABC's of writing as a guide. Nothing should go to press without a second run through to ensure that the 3 criteria are met. Accuracy Facts. Get them right. Misreporting factual evidence destroys your credibility and there is no excuse...
