Effective leadership and bulletproof operations using principles of Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) // Lessons learned on land & at sea
Welcome to issue No. 072 of the LeverLeadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less. But influence to do… what? In the end it comes down to just one thing But first… Time management is a keystone skill for busy professionals. Learn how to manage your time across the big 5 areas; Personal, Professional, Life, Community, and Fitness. Achieve the balance you've been looking for. You don't have to do it all. It probably feels like that somedays though. Like you are the only one that is doing the work. Like you are the only one that cares. This is because most people just want to be told what to do. They want to feel like they have control and are in charge, but they don't actually want to take responsibility for the decisions being made. You need to help them own that responsibility. Whose Job Is It?Every job in an organization needs an owner. Somebody responsible for the outcome. It is NOT the leaders job to lead every job. It is the leaders job to make sure that every job has a leader. Again Your job as a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader. This doesn't mean you aren't accountable for the results of that work however. As a leader you are ultimately answerable for the failure or success of the tasks under your department. But the responsibility of completing that job falls on the person assigned to do the work. No matter what level you are at in the organization, you are accountable for the team assigned to you. And you activate that accountability by making them responsible for the assignment. Leadership is SharedIf the job of a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader, then leadership becomes a shared activity. To do this effectively you need to switch from being solely task focused. You need to zoom out and be able to see the bigger picture. You need to be able to guide teams and individuals. You become a:
And a master of delegation (one of the Foundational 5 Skills). P.S.This idea is so foundational that it needs to be repeated one more time: The job of a leader is to make sure that every job has a leader. This is the ONE job of leaders. |
